Silent Epidemics: Forgotten Histories of HIV & AIDS

Although AIDS is not over, many aspects of the pandemic are already forgotten. Archives and museums have collected some objects but neglected others, while historical narratives focus only on certain groups, ignoring other stories. These incomplete accounts have consequences for health and wellbeing, as public health experts and policymakers, as well as patients and advocate groups, look to the past for lessons for the future. This lecture discusses these issues and a film project intended to broaden perspectives on AIDS in the Netherlands, Voices of the Epidemic.
Prof. dr. Manon Parry is Professor of Medical History at the VU and Senior Lecturer in American Studies and Public History at the UvA. She is currently researching the representation of aids histories and finds them incomplete.
